Heartfelt donation for a home at the end of life: Hospice group Bordesholm/Brügge supports Maria&Martha hospice with 8,000 euros

A place of dignity is being created

Construction has been underway in Neumünster-Einfeld since December 2025. The Maria&Martha hospice will create a place with twelve places where seriously ill people can spend the last phase of their lives in security, dignity and loving care: close to home, professionally and in a family atmosphere. In addition to medical care, the focus will be on emotional care, spiritual guidance and support for relatives. Completion is scheduled for spring 2027.

The project is the result of many years of development work: Diakonie Altholstein has established comprehensive outpatient palliative care in the region over the past 14 years. With the inpatient hospice, it is now taking the next logical step. At its side: the Neumünster Hospice Initiative, which has been providing outpatient palliative care for almost 30 years and will run the new facility together with Diakonie Altholstein.

"No one has to be alone when life comes to an end. We want to ensure this for the city of Neumünster and the region with the construction of the Maria&Martha hospice," says Gesa Kitschke, Managing Director of Diakonie Altholstein. "With this hospice, we are creating a place that gives dying a place in the middle of life, close to the people and their relatives who need support and a sense of security."

More than 25 years of commitment - and a worthy conclusion

The Bordesholm/Brügge hospice group has been providing voluntary support for the seriously ill, the dying and their relatives in the Bordesholm region since 1998, with all members of the group working on a voluntary basis.

"With our donation, we want to have a share. Even though our group has disbanded, we remain committed to hospice work. The Maria & Martha Hospice will undoubtedly be a place of warmth and respect. We are proud to contribute to ensuring that people from our region can be accompanied there with dignity," says Monika Sendker from the Bordesholm hospice group.

"This generous donation is a valuable sign of solidarity for us. Every euro helps us to secure the construction and operation of our hospice and thus also to offer people from Bordesholm and the entire region a place of dignity and loving care at the end of life. Support like this shows that palliative care is a shared task that concerns us all," emphasizes Gesa Kitschke.

Donations remain indispensable

Inpatient hospice care is 95 percent financed by the payers. The remaining five percent, or around 150,000 euros per year, must be covered by donations. Diakonie Altholstein is also dependent on funding and the support of many for the construction costs. So far, the response has been overwhelming: numerous individual donations and the commitment of local partners show how much support there is among the population.
