School resource fund provides satchels for first graders and equipment for retraining

Starting and changing school is a very special event in a child's life and no less exciting for the whole family. However, this day also has a significant financial impact. The costs for materials, school bags and sports equipment amount to around 350 euros, plus the school bag and its contents. This is why families with low incomes in Neumünster receive support from the school resources fund. This has been administered by Diakonie Altholstein since 2013.

The fund provides children living in households with basic income support or low income with high-quality, new schoolbags and backpacks, including pencil cases and sports bags. Applications will be accepted from May 5 at the Diakonie Altholstein family center (Am Alten Kirchhof 2-4). Families only have to pay a contribution of 20 euros.

"The need among families has been increasing for years. At the same time, the funds from the education and participation package, which families are entitled to for the start of school and which includes a budget of 195 euros, are simply not enough to ensure that the children are well equipped to start the new phase of their lives," emphasizes Nadine Ginzel, Head of the Family Division at Diakonie Altholstein. "We are therefore all the more pleased that the Dr. Hans Hoch Foundation is supporting the project this year alongside the city of Neumünster." The city is financing the 2025 school fund with 10,000 euros, while the Dr. Hans Hoch Foundation is contributing 7,000 euros. In addition, the Lederwaren Freytag store has been won as a cooperation partner, providing the satchels and backpacks at good conditions.

Application and issue

The satchels will be handed out from June 2, 2025 after written notification in the Lieblingsstücke store at Kieler Str. 49. "The best thing about handing out the satchels is seeing the children's beaming faces - a real moment of the heart," explains Jessica Wölm, coordinator of the family center at the Anscharforum of Diakonie Altholstein.

"Experience shows that most of the satchels are collected by the summer vacations. In principle, however, it is possible to apply for a school bag or school rucksack until the start of school and receive the school equipment in our store."
